Johannes Bornhold - Computer Scientist
Independent software engineer, self-employed since 2006. Managing director of bo-tech GmbH & Co. KG since 2009.
Twenty years self-employed. What I take on is the Python, TypeScript and Kubernetes work inside your team - the services, the pipeline that ships them, and the tests that make the next change fast instead of risky.
I have also built delivery units and run engineering departments. That is not what I am offering - it is why I recognise the constraints a team is working under, and design inside them instead of around them.
Taking on new work - around half capacity, fully remote.
What I do
- Application development in Python and TypeScript, on a codebase that has to keep working while it changes
- Kubernetes - getting applications onto it, and keeping them running once they are there
- The path from repository to production: packaging, CI, the test suites that run in it, deployment, the operational side nobody owns
- The tests that make all of it safe, so the team stops routing around its own code and a change from an outsider is something you merge rather than audit
- Leaving the team better than I found it - review, pairing, and practices that stay after I go
- Working in the open: upstream projects, public sector, sovereign infrastructure
How I work
I join teams as a working member, not as an outside advisor. That is how I see the real problems - the ones that don't surface in status meetings - and it is why what I leave behind stays: the team learned it by doing the work with me, not by sitting through a presentation.
Recent work
Three years on openDesk at Univention, the sovereign workplace for European public administration. I moved the Nubus identity components into Kubernetes and advanced the Helm charts that deploy them, built up the CI and the end-to-end testing that runs in it, and was interim team lead for part of it.
Background
- Computer Science (Diplom), Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg
- VP of Technology at ERGO Digital IT (2017–2021), after Head of Engineering and Head of Architecture - a digital delivery unit built from the ground up, around 150 people across Berlin and Warsaw
- Lead Developer and Team Lead at Delivery Hero, RhodeCode, Lemoncat
- Python, TypeScript, Kubernetes, NixOS, Linux - from prototype to production
Rust: on my own projects so far, not yet a client's. It is where I want to take the work next, and I am glad to be hired on that basis.
